Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said negotiations with the U.S. are meaningless, according to state media, asserting that talks with Washington have only been followed by renewed attacks.
Pezeshkian said there is no point in negotiating with “an enemy that terrorizes, sanctions, pressures, and threatens on a daily basis,” according to the state media account relayed in a Middle East Eye live blog update [1]. The remarks were reported by Iranian state media and carried in the blog entry Monday, Oct. 5.
The report did not provide a full transcript of the remarks. The remarks came as U.S. President Donald Trump remained open to direct negotiations, while a third tanker in two days was struck near the Strait of Hormuz, the report stated [2].
The statement follows long-running tensions between Tehran and Washington over sanctions, regional policy and nuclear negotiations. Iran has faced U.S. sanctions and pressure campaigns, which Iranian officials have cited in past remarks about diplomacy. Pezeshkian previously told Al Jazeera that Iran no longer trusts negotiations with the U.S. after previous rounds of talks were followed by attacks and sanctions [3].
The two sides have cycled through proposals, rejections and stalled talks. Iran proposed a seven-day plan to restart nuclear talks and reopen the Strait of Hormuz under certain conditions, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Tehran later said a U.S. response was “under review” [4].
A day after the U.S. response, Iranian officials said Araghchi had received Washington’s formal response and presented it to Pezeshkian during a Cabinet meeting, while disclosing neither its contents nor whether the U.S. accepted, rejected or countered Iran’s offer [5]. The report of Pezeshkian’s remarks did not indicate whether any formal negotiations were scheduled or underway at the time of the statement.
Multiple outlets carried the same statement. No independent confirmation of the remarks was included in the report, and no U.S. response was cited. The statement, as reported, restates a public position that could affect the prospects for future Iran-U.S. talks.
Officials have not announced any new diplomatic schedule following the statement, the report indicated. U.S. officials believe Trump could order a return to “major combat operations” against Iran after the midterm elections, as Qatar-mediated negotiations have made little progress, Axios reported [8].
Any effect on negotiations would depend on official follow-up statements and actions, which were not detailed in the source. Trump also said the war with Iran could end soon, “probably right after the elections”, while questioning who in Tehran Washington could negotiate with [9]. Iranian state media similarly later denied that any communication with the U.S. was taking place [10].
Pezeshkian’s reported comment reiterates that, from his stated view, negotiations with the U.S. are meaningless under current conditions. No new talks or diplomatic meetings were announced in the report. Further developments would be reported if Iranian or U.S. officials issue additional comments, according to standard news practice.
